Conferences & Training
The County of Wetaskiwin strongly believes that continued training and education is essential to the professional and personal growth of all of its employees. Providing continued opportunities for growth and develop are vital components of building a strong and successful organization.
A portion of the Municipal Intern Grant is earmarked for training and conference expenses. The County strongly encourages the Intern to use this funding to its full extent. As part of a workplan devised between the Intern and their supervisor, the Intern will have the opportunity to determine the best means for using their professional development budget.
Some examples of courses and workshops that past interns have taken or attended include:
- Applied Land Use Planning Certificate (U of A)
- Courses in Effective Public Participation
- Courses in Emergency Management
- Training for certification as a Clerk of the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board
- Workshops on Records Management and FOIP
- Various safety courses and workshops (Defensive Driving, First Aid, Dealing with Difficult People, etc.)
In addition to taking educational courses, the Intern will also have the opportunity to attend a variety of conferences that best suit their program stream and fields of interest. Some of the more common conferences for interns to attend include:
- Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) Spring and Fall Conventions
- Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) Convention
- Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) Conference
- Alberta Development Officers Association (ADOA) Conference
- Alberta Municipal Clerks Association (AMCA) Conference
- Society of Local Government Managers (SLGM) Conference
- Local Government Administration Association of Alberta (LGAA) Conference
- Alberta Rural Municipal Administrators' Association (ARMAA) Conference
