Business Development
The County does not issue business licenses. Authorization to operate a business within the County is granted through the submission of an approved Business Development Permit Application.
Home Occupation
The Land Use Bylaw defines two types of Home Occupations: Minor and Major. Please refer to the dropdown menu to determine whether your business qualifies as a minor or major home occupation.
A Development Permit is not required for a Home Occupation, Minor, as long as the business complies with the following conditions:
- on-premise sales or customer visits that total 10 or less per day;
- on-site storage of a maximum of one (1) commercial vehicle, not weighing more than 5,500 kg;
- indoor on-site storage of up to 800 sq ft;
- a maximum of three (3) employees that do not live on the property;
- no outdoor storage; and
- customer visits shall be restricted to the hours of 7:00am to 9:00pm.
All Home Occupation, Major require approval through the submission of an approved Business Development Permit Application and must comply with the following conditions:
- on-premise sales or customer visits that total 20 or less per day;
- on-site storage of a maximum of two (2) commercial vehicles.
- indoor on-site storage of up to 3,000 sq ft;
- a maximum of five (5) employees that do not live on the property.
- outdoor storage is permitted to a maximum of 1% of the parcel area (with possible screening
- requirements); and
- customer visits shall be restricted to the hours of 7:00am to 9:00pm
To mitigate impacts to neighbouring properties, the Development Authority may place conditions on a development permit for a Home Occupation, including but not limited to:
- the location, scale and visibility of outdoor storage areas to ensure the residential and/or rural
- character of the area is maintained, and the proposed development does not negatively impact
- neighbouring properties;
- the hours of operation of the business;
- the number of off-site employees;
- the size and location of parking areas;
- on-site advertising; and
- the number, size, location, and visibility of commercial vehicles allowed to be stored on-site.
Note: Per the Land Use Bylaw all Home Occupations shall be subject to the following regulations:
- All signage shall be in accordance with Sign Regulations;
- If providing food services, must pass all required inspections by the health authority and/or fire authority; and
- Shall not discharge or emit beyond the parcel boundaries in excess of what would be typical from a residential premises including duration:
- odorous, noxious or toxic matter, or vapour;
- smoke, fumes, glare, radiation;
- recurring noise, ground vibration;
- fire hazard, electrical interference; or
- otherwise interfere with the use and enjoyment of neighbouring properties.
