The Project
The Land Use Bylaw (LUB) is the “rule book” for managing development in the County. The regulations in the LUB are intended to address and minimize the potential impacts created by subdivision and development, providing certainty to those who live, work, and play in the County. This project aims to ensure the County of Wetaskiwin Land Use Bylaw reflects Council direction, community needs, environmental health, and best practices in Planning and Development.
What’s been done so far?
In the fall of 2023, the County embarked on a Land Use Bylaw educational roadshow throughout the County. Approximately 66 residents attended the roadshow where we were able to share the purpose of the project and get initial feedback from members of the community like yourself. At the same time as the roadshow, a survey was released to gather input on specific LUB topics. The survey was well received with a total of 246 responses submitted. The feedback received is being taken into account as we draft the new Land Use Bylaw.
Where are we at?
We are currently in Phase 4, where we take the feedback from the community engagement and the background research conducted by the project team, and work to craft a new Bylaw that meets today's needs and future demands.
Staying informed
Over the next few months, as the work on the draft Land Use Bylaw continues, we will endeavour to provide more updates on our progress. The updates will include sharing the results from the survey and explaining how the feedback was or was not incorporated into the drafting of the regulations. In this regard, we have attached a summary of some of the demographic information collected from survey titled “Understanding Our Community.”
What comes next?
Getting diverse perspectives from local stakeholders, industry experts, and community members is crucial in the rewrite of the Land Use Bylaw, so below are the next steps following the drafting of the LUB and tentative timelines.
| Late Spring/ Early Summer | Public Open House, Referrals to adjacent municipalities, agencies and other local stakeholders - The community will be able to weigh in to ensure the draft Land Use Bylaw aligns with the community's needs and land use planning principles.

| Summer | Review of the draft Land Use Bylaw - Adjustments will be made based on the feedback from the open houses
|
| Fall | Public Hearing/ Formal Adoption- Community members can speak in favour of or against the draft Land Use Bylaw, and the Council will make a decision about the document.
