The Government of Alberta awarded $1.16 million from the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership to the County of Wetaskiwin for Winfield lagoon upgrades. This funding will cover 75% of the total cost of upgrading the lagoon. The total cost of this project is estimated at $1.54 million.
“The County of Wetaskiwin would like to thank the Honorable Devin Dreeshen and the Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors for providing funding for the Winfield Lagoon upgrade project,” stated Reeve Josh Bishop. “This project will provide the residents of Winfield with a critical service upgrade and protect the environment from premature releases and ensure regulatory compliance. We appreciate the Government of Alberta's prioritization of this project.”
The current wastewater lagoon at Winfield has been in operation for approximately 15 years and needs upgrades to meet current operational and environmental requirements. Work involves cell rehabilitation, and the installation of an underdrain and liner. This upgrade will increase the capacity and treatment performance of the lagoon and reduce the need for emergency discharges during heavy rainfall events. The Winfield lagoon upgrade project will involve detailed design and tender preparation in 2023, with construction scheduled for 2024.
