[ARCHIVED] Richardson Ground Squirrel (aka Gopher)

Richardson Ground Squirrels

With Strychnine no longer registered for use on Richardson Ground Squirrels (RGS), commonly referred to as gophers. There are other control options:

  • The best technique for RGS control involves an integrated pest management (IPM) approach, consisting of a variety of methods to keep pest populations in check. Early spring (prior to green up) is by far the best time to act.
    • Poisoning is particularly effective in large scale infestations. There are a few products available to the general public that can be found at local farm supply stores, such as UFA and COOP. There are also some options available to licensed pest control officers, but these options are often hard to source, and custom application can be cost prohibitive.
    • Other lethal methods include shooting and trapping. Please ensure all regulations are followed when utilizing these options. Both methods are effective, but require a significant time investment.
    • RGS can be discouraged by keeping vegetation at least 15 cm tall (via rotational grazing) and encouraging predators such as raptor and owls by maintaining tall tree habitat or installing nesting platforms.
