[ARCHIVED] News Release: County Receives $100,000 Water for Life Grant for Regional Water Study

Regional Water

The County of Wetaskiwin is pleased to announce it has been awarded $100,000 through the Government of Alberta’s Water for Life program, administered by the Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors. This funding will support a comprehensive feasibility study to explore regional water system opportunities in partnership with the Town of Thorsby.

Access to reliable water infrastructure is an increasing challenge for the County of Wetaskiwin and the surrounding region. This grant highlights the County’s proactive efforts to identify innovative and cost-effective infrastructure solutions that align with provincial priorities for regional collaboration, sustainable development, and economic growth. The feasibility study will evaluate the technical, legal, environmental, and financial considerations of a potential regional water distribution model, providing critical information to guide future investments and strengthen intermunicipal partnerships.

“This funding reflects the Province of Alberta’s recognition of the importance of long-term water security in rural regions,” said Reeve Josh Bishop. “We are grateful for the Province’s support and proud of the strong advocacy efforts led by County Council to secure this grant.”

“Council has made water servicing a top advocacy priority,” added CAO Scott MacDougall. “This study will help us determine the best path forward and ensure that we are prepared to meet the long-term needs of our communities.”

The County looks forward to working closely with the Town of Thorsby and other partners throughout the project and will share updates as the study progresses.
