A local improvement is essentially a large-scale construction project that benefits a particular subdivision or area of the County, rather than the municipality as a whole.
By implementing a local improvement in a given area, the County can work with property owners in that area to facilitate community growth and sustainability. Some of the benefits that a local improvement project can offer to communities include:
- Potential increase in property values and community attractiveness;
- Reduced impact on County infrastructure; and
- Greater accessibility to services and amenities within the community.
Because a local improvement would provide benefits to a specific area of the County rather than the County as a whole, it would be paid for through a local improvement tax on the property owners within the specific area. It would not be paid for by the municipality as a whole.
