Relevant Provincial Legislation

While the County has jurisdiction over development through the Municipal Government Act, there are numerous other regulatory bodies who have jurisdiction over many different aspects that can be directly related to a proposed development but not under the jurisdiction of the County. The County has complied the below list of provincial legislation and regulation to act as a reference to promote good planning and to ensure developers and proposed developments are both aware of and comply with all other legislative requirements. 

Municipal Government Act
 This act is the legislative framework in which all municipalities and municipal entities across the Province of Alberta operate. It outlines the purpose, powers and capacity of municipalities. 

Subdivision and Development Regulations 

The Subdivision and Development Regulations outlines the regulations that must be followed when applying for or a developing a subdivision and other developments.

 Alberta Land Stewardship Act


 This legislation provides a framework for coordinated decision-making, develops policy to enable sustainable development and is the legal basis for regional land-use planning in Alberta. 

The Land-use Framework (LUF) sets out how Alberta’s land and natural resources are managed to ensure long-term economic, environmental and social sustainability. The LUF established seven new land-use regions and requires the development of a regional plan for each. The County of Wetaskiwin No. 10 is a part of the North Saskatchewan Region Plan.  

Agricultural Operations Practices Act
This provincial legislation sets manure management standards for all agricultural operations in Alberta who handle manure. The purpose of the Act is to ensure that the province’s livestock industry can grow to meet the opportunity presented by local and world markets in an environmentally sustainable manner. 

Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) 

AMVIC is Alberta’s automotive industry regulator and is supported by Consumer Protection Act and the Traffic Safety Act. AMVIC is an independent delegated authority and is accountable to the Alberta Government through a delegation agreement with the Minister of Service Alberta. 

Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act


This Act is the primary act in Alberta through which regulatory requirements related to air quality is managed. The purpose of EPEA is to support and promote the protection, enhancement and wise use of the environment. 

Natural Resources Conservation Board Act

This Act is to provide for an impartial process to review projects that will or may affect the natural resources of Alberta in order to determine whether, in the Board’s opinion, the projects are in the public interest, having regard to the social and economic effects of the projects and the effect of the projects on the environment.

Public Health Act 

This act addresses matters relating to public health issues.

Public Highways Development Act

This Act provides guidelines around roadways, bridges, and development around public highways. 

Highways Development and Protection Act

 

This Act provides for the administrative structure of Alberta’s highway network and emphasizes public safety through regulating the physical condition of the highway network. 

Safety Codes Act

This Act established a unifying administration to ten safety disciplines which each have their own safety codes to keep the public safe in the places they live, work and play.
